Practice The Rule of Ten Percent

 

This one will be short and sweet.  It goes like this:  every time you get a paycheck,

take ten percent off the top and deposit it into a bank account that you can’t touch for the next fifty years.

 

Ah, if only!  If only my parents had told me about this golden rule of how to save back in my baby-sitting days, I’d be sitting on bags of money today. Well, perhaps not physically sitting on money bags,  but I’d be sitting pretty – “financially pretty”.

 

It’s entirely possible, given the rules of compound interest, that I’d have saved close to half a million dollars.  Consider the fact that I started earning money when I was fourteen years old.  In those days, I was the Mary Poppins of babysitters.

 

Two years ago, when my son started working, I sat him down and introduced him to the rule of ten percent.   He’d just opened a savings account. I showed him how to open a second account that we refer to as the “do not touch under any circumstances account”.

 

He was nineteen then.  Just imagine how much he will have accumulated by the time he’s fifty-five.
